You wake up after a night out with a dry mouth, a pounding head, and a powerful thirst. There is a reason for that, and it comes down to how alcohol changes the way your kidneys handle water. Here is exactly what happens, why some drinks dehydrate you more than others, and what actually helps you stay ahead of it.
Why alcohol makes you lose water
Your body has a hormone called vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone (ADH). Its job is to tell your kidneys how much water to reabsorb back into your bloodstream instead of sending it to your bladder. When vasopressin is working normally, your kidneys hold on to water and your urine is more concentrated.
Alcohol suppresses the release of vasopressin.[1] With less of the hormone circulating, your kidneys reabsorb less water and send more of it out as urine. That is why you find yourself making frequent trips to the bathroom after a couple of drinks, and why you end up losing more fluid than you took in. The medical term for a substance that does this is a diuretic, and alcohol is a well-established one.[2]
It is worth knowing that the picture is a little more nuanced than "alcohol always dehydrates." Research on healthy volunteers has shown that alcohol's effect on vasopressin is strongest in the first few hours after drinking, when the diuretic effect is most pronounced. Later, as blood alcohol falls, the body can shift toward retaining water.[3] But the practical takeaway holds: during and shortly after a drinking session, you are losing more fluid than usual.
It is not just water: electrolytes leave too
When you urinate more, you do not just lose water. You also lose electrolytes, the charged minerals your body uses to regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle function. The main ones affected by alcohol are sodium, potassium, and magnesium.[4]
